The Contemporary English Country home by Jesse Sahlani is a unique bungalow that he had a lot of fun designing because of the large lot its set on. Everything about this home is a reflection of Jesse’s most intimate and honest thoughts of what it means to strike a balance between the authentically rustic style of the English countryside and a sleekly contemporary approach that supports lifestyle focused living. The word we would associate with this home is “sprawling” as a result of its H shaped footprint that created the opportunity for Jesse to design a number of architecturally significant exterior facade faces that uniquely characterize the outdoor living spaces. The rustic stone Jesse chose is a mixture of both limestone and fieldstone native to Ontario and features a flush mortar joint installation. The standing seam metal roof is made of lead, an intentional selection by Jesse for the old world style patina this material offers when exposed to the elements. However, this roofing material in a standing seam format offers a new world design profile that he blended with other more rustic features to create an intentional yet suave juxtaposition. The floor to ceiling windows featured throughout the home are also a noteworthy and stylistically juxtaposing feature, offering a view into the uniquely designed interior that Jesse created while walking the same stylistically blended line. These same windows also look onto the gardens that Jesse designed, including plant selection and placement, as well as garden lighting to create a unique ambience during the evening hours in specific rooms.
Jesse designed the interior of this home with a similar design intent in mind as he did for the exterior, stylishly and subtly mixing the contemporary refined style he is known for with the rustic undertone of the english countryside. The palette he selected for the interior includes a mixture of white oak ceiling and wall paneling, as well as interior fieldstone accents. These simple and natural materials paired with the unique interior proportions, window placements, and exterior garden views create a unique sense of visual connectivity between spaces. The interior of this home is a classic example of how Jesse’s cohesive design approach that includes custom home design, interior design, and landscape design creates a luxurious, thoughtful, and well proportioned structure that has a gracious indoor/outdoor connection. When one person possesses the skillset to execute their design vision in each of these design categories, they are able to consider the weight of their decisions in the grand scheme of the environment being created both inside and out. Through this process Jesse considers everything from the proportions, to natural light, to flow of the spaces in conjunction with one another. A project like this requires thoughtful master planning when there are so many wings, amenities, gardens, and architectural features both inside and out if you plan to create a luxurious environment no matter where you stand on the grounds.
